An American Post-impressionist painter of Swedish origin, Birger Sandzen is known as a talented landscape painter and graphic artist depicting the natural beauty of the American South-West.
The father of the future artist was a priest, played the violin and wrote poetry; his mother studied drawing.
In the creative heritage of the author, there are more than 30 thousand works made in the technique of oil painting, watercolors, lithographs, engravings and print. The artist was an active public figure: he organized the annual art exhibition of Midwestern art in Lindsborg and the Smokey Hill Art Club. He was a member of several influential art communities. The artist was awarded the prestigious Order of the Northern Star in his homeland and was an honorary doctor of the Midland Lutheran College, the University of Nebraska and Kanza State University. As a tribute to the contribution of Sandzen to the life of the Bethany College, founded by Swedish immigrants, the Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery was created at the school.

Sven Birger Sandzén was born in 1871 in Blidsberg, Västergötland, Sweden.
Entered an elementary school in Skara and continued his studies at Skara College, Sweden. He studied drawing and painting with Olaf Erlandson.
Entered Lund University, Sweden, where he studied French language and aesthetics. However, the next year he entered the class of Anders Zorn in Stockholm, studied painting and created his first paintings.
He went to Paris to continue his studies. Painted at the workshop of artist Aman-Jean. Received an invitation to work at Bethany College, moved to the USA.
Organized the first Annual exhibition of Sweden and American art in the USA, which later became known as the art exhibition of the Midwest.
Married Alfreda MacPherson, whom he had taken care of for a long time, and built a house in Lindsborg. Traveled around the country a lot, making a few trips to Sweden. At that period he created his best works, actively participated in public life.
Organized the Smoky Hill Art Club at Bethany College to support people’s interest in art, as well as to create a foundation for the purchase of works of art for the College collection.
Made a trip to the southwest and was inspired by mountain landscapes; participated in several exhibitions.
Created a lot of paintings, mostly landscapes. His palette became brighter and lighter; the specific style of the master was finally established. In that period, he created a community of printed publications, opened a gallery and studio in his own house. Took part in social activities.
The artist died on June 19, 1954 in Lindsborg, Kansas, USA.
