Ștefan Luchian was born on February 1, 1868 in the town of Stefanesti.
1868 - 1916
A Romanian Impressionist (landscape, portrait, still-life) and a master of monumental paintings, the creator of the Romanian school of painting of the early 20th century.
Born into the family of major Dumitru Luchian, who lived after resigning in the Botosani district, Stefanesti village.
S. Luchian became one of the initiators of the Ileana Society of the dissemination of artistic taste in Romania and was an active participant of it. At the same time, the society published a magazine with the same name, for which the artist wrote articles on art criticism. S. Luchian received a high award – the Medalia Bene Merenti medal of the 1st class (1909).
In 1981, a feature film was made about the life of S. Luchian.
Key Ideas:
– Stefan Luchian, although he learned the lessons of Academicism, opposed the extremely conservative foundations of traditional art. He propagandized free creativity without restrictions, which would truly show modern themes and problems in modern art techniques.
– The palette of genres, in which Luchian worked, was very diverse. He was equally interested in landscapes and portraits, as well as still lifes and everyday genre themes.
– Working in the open air, Stefan strives for unexpected, often “sharp” solutions, and uses bright, color-saturated palette. That is why the pictures are always full of sun and saturated with air, combine realistic features with a clearly inherent national ideal in the subject, and new opportunities for self-expression in an artistic form in the technics.
– Acting as a talented creator of poeticized national images, the artist at the same time shows the beauty of nature with its uniqueness.
– In the last years of his life, being almost completely paralyzed and working with a brush, which he held with his teeth, Luchian created colorful pictures. His special emotional expressiveness in color, decorative festivity, the purity of lines are combined with the works of folk art.
– Pictures on social themes (genre scenes), psychological portraits (mostly the images of ordinary people), landscapes, and still lifes differ in the expressive manner of performance, exceptionally sonorous coloring.
