Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born on the 25th of February in 1841 in the south of Central France in the town of Limoges.
1841 - 1919
A French painter, portraitist, graphic artist and sculptor, a founder of the first modernist movement – Impressionism (along with Claude Monet, Frédéric Bazille, Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro). He is deservedly considered the author of a sentimental portrait.
Key ideas:
– As a follower of Impressionism (although during only about the first 10 years of its existence), Renoir embodied emotion (impression) through a quick pictorial sketch obtained from the first impression.
– The image of a fleeting moment is present in individual chamber or family portraits and in large-scale multi-figure paintings.
– Searching for the truth in art, Renoir radically changes his own painting style at different times, constantly trying out new coloristic ways and solutions: he refuses from the light palette in favor of rich, even aggressive red; then he uses the polyphony of black color, or focuses on the exceptional clarity of the pattern.
– It is interesting that the artist himself declared that he doesn’t understand anything in painting and cannot stand theories of art, as well as the “intellectuals” in general. He was more interested in women, roses and children; it was reflected in the themes of paintings by the original artist.
