Frederic Bazille was born on December 6 in the estate of a wealthy Protestant family, near the town of Montpellier (in the south of France). His parents were engaged in winemaking.
1841 - 1870
One of the founders of Impressionism (although less well-known than his famous colleagues).
Having lived only 29 years, the artist created more than 50 bright paintings and expressive, memorable portraits. His paintings are distinguished by their freshness, inspiration and dynamism inherent in youth.
Key ideas:
– Frederic Bazille beautifully embodied the main ideas of Impressionism in his work. Being at its very source, he perfectly mastered those artistic techniques, which later became the fundamental principles of the whole art movement.
– Pictures of the artist are notable for their special elegance and refinement. Saturated with light and air, they seem to live their own lives, conveying all lightness and ease inherent in Impressionism. The artist’s use of the “new color” and skillful modeling of human figures illustrated the main features of the realistic impressionist style. The painting of Bazille harmoniously relates the traditional position of figures with outdoor (plein-air) practice.
– Bazille’s favorite theme was people on the background of nature; many paintings are the views of Normandy. The young artist often depicted his relatives and friends, as well as himself with them. Impressionist canvases attract by the optimism and joy of life. Remaining realistic and vital, the characters of Bazille symbolize unity with the outside world, harmony with nature and oneself.

Frederic Bazille was born on December 6 in the estate of a wealthy Protestant family, near the town of Montpellier (in the south of France). His parents were engaged in winemaking.
Graduated from high school and began to study medicine. He was interested in painting. Visiting museums and art exhibitions, he became acquainted with the works of Eugene Delacroix.
Moved to Paris, continued to study medicine. He began to attend the workshop of Charles Glayer, where he met O. Renoir, Claude Monet and A. Sisley.
Decided to become an artist and said about this to his parents. Met Paul Cézanne and Camille Pissarro. After much deliberation, the parents accepted their son’s decision and allowed him to rent a workshop in Paris.
Participated in an exhibition a first time. At the Salon, one painting by Bazille was exhibited – “Still life with fish”.
During his summer stay with his parents in Montpellier, he painted the famous painting “In the family circle”, in which he depicted himself surrounded by relatives on a summer terrace.
His “Family portrait” took part in the Salon. Bazille spent the winter in the company of his Impressionist friends: Renoir, Manet, Pissarro, Cezanne, Monet. Often visited the cafe “Herbua”.
The painting “View of the Village” took part in the Salon, had a certain success: it was highly appreciated by many lovers of modern art and was recognized as one of the best in its genre.
At the Paris Salon, the painting “Bathers” aroused genuine interest and heated discussion. The artist was inspired, as evidenced by his letters to his parents.
On August 10, 1870, Frederick Bazille volunteered to take part in the Franco-Prussian war. On November 28, the young man died under Bon-la-Roland before he turned twenty-nine.
