A French artist, a bright representative of symbolism in painting. Edgard Maxence was called “the last of the Symbolists” for his commitment to one single style throughout his life. The artist was an active participant in the Paris Salon, and later a member of its committee, was a member of the jury. He was awarded the gold medal at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900; his art was very popular in society.
Key ideas:
– Symbolism born in response to materialism, belief in progress and a partial return to the highly art models of the past are the main features of Edgard Maxence’s individual style. His mysticism, search for the rich and peaceful inner world of the mythical time appealed to many of his contemporaries, who sought calmness, luxury and serenity. Perhaps that is why Maxence’s paintings were so popular among ordinary people, despite the existence of more progressive art movements and fading interest to Symbolism.
– The main themes of the author are mythical stories, allegoric medieval scenes and scenes from people’s life, full of mystical and mysterious sense. In combination with unsurpassed technique and subtle artistic taste, Maxence’s paintings create a complete impression, while wide brushstrokes, gorgeous frames and the use of gold create a sense of elegance and luxury.
– The author used wax mixed with oil paints to paint faces, making them more lively, like if shining from inside. He developed his own painting technique, where the composition if clearly redefined, and the characters are arranged in the prescribed manner.
– Certain decorativeness and monumentality of Maxcence’s art led to the fact that the artist was invited to paint facades and interior of buildings. In 1895, he worked on the decoration of the Rosicrucian Society Salon; in 1920, he painted the Mother of God on the vaulted ceiling of the Holy Rosary in Lourdes.
– At the same time, Edgard Maxence created illustrations and a number of portraits characterized by their extraordinary sublimity and religiosity. The author painted many still-lifes and landscapes, and also graphic works in the technique of lithography. A large number of works by Edgar Maxence was found in his studio after the artist’s death.
