To create the composition, the artist used a scene from a comic strip, as he did in his other works. Lichtenstein did not completely redraw the plot from the magazine but cut the image in half. He removed the girl’s boyfriend, who was standing in a boat near her and to whom her words were addressed, “I do not care! I would rather drown, but not call Brad for help!” Thus, the image was filled with new dramatic meaning, and the girl who was left alone among the surging waves had practically no chance to survive.
