description

The Museum of Modern Art, New York (the USA).

Lithography paper.

This poster is a striking example of the author’s technique of colour photomontage and no less striking example of a propaganda work. Using a photograph of the palm of his hand, Gustav Klutsis repeated the image at different scales. So mass and unanimity – the main of the postulates of that time – are presented clearly. The bright red background immediately attracts attention; the original composition and easy to read thought prompt action. The author placed the main element diagonally, and the palm became a pointing gesture. It is no accident that the poster was also used with an inscription calling to come to the polls and vote. Gustavs Klucis called his work “laboratory” research, during which he tried to solve specific problems. Formal problems – texture, colour, space, dynamics – attracted the attention of the master in the early 1920s and later developed into the ability to convey ideas to the viewer convincingly.
