Although Joseph Kossuth used only single words or short phrases that could be viewed right away in his first neon installations, the “Suggestions” have 86 quotes of different lengths written by dozens of philosophers. The quotes were placed horizontally and vertically; this little explains the logic of their location. There is a text of Claude Levy-Strauss, “Marx and Freud taught us that a person makes sense only if he considers himself significant”. The main goal of the entire installation was to demonstrate that there are a lot of similarities between philosophers of different eras and places, but there are also controversial issues. Kosuth used texts for this neon installation that emphasize the most important thoughts and conclusions for him.
