Bronze Age

author

Francois-Auguste-Rene Rodin

description

Mediums: bronze.
Location: the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, the USA).

The author created this work under the impression of his trip to Italy, which Rodin made in 1876. Initially, the plaster sculpture was called “Defeated”, and the soldier had a spear in his hand. Later, the master made the statue of bronze, removing the weapon and changing the name. With its frank expression and inconsistency with classical canons, the statue exhibited at the Paris Salon got different reviews from the public. Many even said that Rodin just made a cast from his model, as the sculpture looked realistic; however, the opposite was proved with the help of witnesses and photographs.
