A man with a broken nose

author

Francois-Auguste-Rene Rodin

description

Mediums: marble.
Location: The Rodin Museum, Paris. France.

The early work of the sculptor testifies not only to his extraordinary talent but also to his interest in everything unusual, unlike accepted canons and established rules. Rodin was inspired to create the bust by an ordinary worker of a stable, where he equipped his workshop. The master was attracted not so much by the extraordinary appearance of a person with a broken nose bridge but the expressiveness and mobility of his face, energy in facial expressions and movements. Naturally, the crooked nose, wrinkled face and its simple-minded expression did not get approval from the jury of the Paris Salon, where the author sent his work. Despite this, the bust became a symbol of the fact that the artist was concerned not about the emphasized beauty of a person but about their original image, with all the flaws and traces of his life.
