The female figures of Aristide Maillol are classically proportional; the surface of the sculptures is smoothly polished. However, in the sculpture “Air”, a departure from academicism is also obvious. The bronze naked nymph of the natural element is depicted in a complex “soaring” pose, which immediately attracts the attention of the viewer. Despite the outward brightness, Maillol reached absolute completeness and monumentality in this work. At the same time, he confirmed his creative credo: sculpture should carry a certain author’s idea, understandable to others.
