Aristide Maillol

description

Mediums: bronze.
Location: Schlossplatz in Stuttgart (Germany).

The work belongs to the period of creativity when Maillol only turned to sculpture as his main art (the artist was 40 years old). The flawless in composition and delightfully plastic figure, made in classical traditions, contains musicality and poetry – the most characteristic and distinctive qualities of Maillol’s works. The seated naked woman seems to freeze in eternity, symbolizing peace and self-deepening. The image is both the perfection of forms created by nature and simple “reasonable” beauty. The sculpture was acquired by the German Count G. Kessler, an ardent admirer of Aristide’s talent and a propagandist of his work in his country. A copy of the sculpture is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York).
