Hands Holding the Void (Invisible Object)

author

Alberto Giacometti

description

Mediums: bronze.
Location: The Museum of Modern Art, New York (the USA).

The work was created in the period when Giacometti began to move away from the circle of Surrealists and again turned to the visual tradition while maintaining the theme of elusive and sometimes even invisible images. The stage and transitional sculpture was the image of a girl compositionally placed in a narrow and very elongated frame. The stability of the vertical female figure, mounted on a low pedestal with wheels, is provided by a banked seat and a “falling” part-bar at her feet. Thus, the balance is achieved in an original, even paradoxical way.
