Ernst Barlach

description

Mediums: bronze.
Location: The E. Barlach House-Museum, Hamburg (Germany).

It is interesting to consider this sculpture in the context of the views of the author. This “militant” figure of Barlach is a symbol of the “world massacre”. Later, becoming a convinced pacifist, he depicted those who died, sorrow, suffering and pain. The “Avenger”, which is close to the thinking of postmodernism, represents a throw and swing – a moment of violence as if snatched by a flash. The author resorted to cubist techniques, combining them with the balance and stability of classical sculpture. Thus, a basic static is under external dynamics. It is noteworthy that the author named the work “Melancholic Berserker” (this was a warrior who dedicated his life to God Odin).
