The Great Warrior of Montauban

The work that became a separate sculpture was a part of the Montauban War Memorial, commissioned and executed in honor of those who died during the Franco-Prussian battles, and was originally made of plaster. The expressively depicted warrior was cast in bronze in 1956. In addition to the specimen that can be seen in Washington, there is a sculpture in Tokyo and other cities of the world. When looking at the figure, the viewer is convinced of the correctness of the critic who described the entire monument as the fallen like “horror that denies the laws of anatomy”. The extremely athletic character is depicted at the climax of the sword. It is noteworthy that the hero’s energetically raised hand also became a separate work – bronze copies of this masterpiece are exhibited in many museums around the world.
