1940
Installation.
Private collection (Berlin, Germany).
The famous installation was created from an ordinary umbrella covered with a carpet of dry sea sponges. The unusual combination of such inappropriate things caused great interest among the public, as well as artists, colleagues of Paalen. According to Surrealists, “Nuage articulé” perfectly illustrates the natural feminine essence, which is demonstrated by a soft and damp sponge, while an umbrella is a masculine symbol of order and protection from natural forces.
The composition became the central exhibit of the large International Exhibition of Surrealism, which was held in Paris in 1938 and was many times reproduced by the author for several customers.
